What is the “culture industry” and how does it manage to control and influence populations, according to Horkeimer and Adorno? Is this the same phenomenon that Herman and Chomsky discuss?

How is the concept of propaganda related to McLuhan’s idea that “the medium is the message”, and in particular what is the role of the “content” of the economic commodities the media/culture industries in these readings?
